The Story, Part 1 - The Dark Bringers:
Omega General Industries are excavating on the moon and discover alien
bodies and a gargoyle statue that have been there over 1000 years. The
aliens were killed by something that turned their eyes into black
crystals. As the status was being studied, it causes the scientists to
start hallucinating. This is the start of a deadly alien encounter for those
on Starlab.
Editorial Comments for Part 1:
This is the first, and only, three part story in the series.
Part 1 of the ISA Conspiracy is hands down the best single episode of the
series. It is a great setup with a creepy statue that silently moves
and grows. It is a silent menace that is quietly taking over, akin to
a classic story like Invasion of the Body Snatchers. The menace is
there. The audience knows it, the characters do not. This story
pains a very clear sci-fi horror story for me. While part 2 and 3 are
still good stories, they are eclipsed by this part one. Part 1 is a
great setup indeed.
In the first segment of this episode, Frank refers to his co-pilot as “Lou”
several times. After the commercial break, he calls him “Lee”.
It isn’t clear if that was a mistake or if one of them was a nickname.
The Story, Part 2 - The Deatons:
After finding 50 mummified aliens and a stone statue on the Moon, Professor
Victor Conrad is killed as he experiments on a segment from the statue when
lunar base 12 is attacked. Stygose, high priest of the Trell arrives
at Starlab demanding return of the statue. When Maura does not provide
the location, she is blinded by Stygose.
Editorial Comments for Part 2:
In the story there is a debate of science being used for the betterment of
life vs weapons. The “Petroleum Wars” are also mentioned.
Unfortunately, these concepts were not far-fetched in the 1970s, and they
still remain as a possible future.
The Story, Part 3 - Light Storm:
Maura has been blinded by Stygose. Feadra from the floating city, Embria,
said she would restore Maura’s sight. While traveling to Embria,
Stygose is still moving forward with his plan to recover the statue.
Editorial Comments for Part 3:
The Trell are portrayed as a race that is evil and puts themselves over all
other kind of life. Even acts of kindness between members of their own
race does not seem possible. They seem to be evil to other races
simply because they can be evil. This probably makes them the most
notorious of all of the aliens that appeared on Alien Worlds. The
story uses the story telling device that has been in use for as long as
recorded history, the evil is represented by black and darkness while good
is equated with white and light. The analogy is a very literal
representation here as the Deatons use light to defeat the Trell.
The creepy sci-fi horror of the first episode is not part of this
episode. While there is some tension between the characters, things
are not as dire within this episode.
The Deatons hint that they will again meet with humanity, although it sounds
as if it would take 100s of years, providing a melancholy ending to the
episode.
This episode provides the listeners the ability to contact Alien Worlds via
mail. At the end of the episode, Roger Dressler provides a PO address
to write to the cast and crew. It would be interesting to know how
much mail was received from listeners. If this was a response to the
popularity of the series, then it seems that this happened all very quickly
being that this is only the 6th story, although it would be the 13 weeks
into the series.
