The Story, Part 1:
Dr. Paul Cramer is conducting dangerous hydrogen experiments in an
experimental pod near Starlab. As Maura spacewalks over to the pod an
alien, bat shaped, ship appears above the pod. The Anubis pod
explodes. Dr. Cramer is killed and Maura Cassidy cannot be found. Jon and
Buddy begin a search for Maura as this episode brings Starlab into contact
with two alien worlds.
Editorial Comments for Part 1:
This episode uses a vocorder for the alien voices. A vocorder uses a
musical sound and a person’s voice controls the envelope of the sound.
It can make a human voice sound like a musical instrument. While this
was not a new device in 1978, it was still a relatively new device to
audiences in the late 70s as it was becoming more available for use to those
who could afford it. A well known example of a vocorder from this time
would be the voice of the Cylons in Battlestar Galactica
The Story, Part 2:
Maura was saved from an explosion by a mysterious lifeform called The
Keeper. The explosion was caused by aliens called Draconians who were
after the hydrogen used in the experiment. The Draconians plan to
remove all of the hydrogen from the Earth’s oceans, which would ultimately
kill all life on Earth. While moving forward with their plan, the
Draconians wonder if they will find The Keeper.
Editorial Comments for Part 2:
Preparing for the battle, a flight bay announcement says, “…rendezvous at
THX Coordinates 1138…” This is a reference to the 1971 film “THX 1138”
which is about a future society where there is a man with the designation
THX 1138.
The first episode is more exciting than the second episode. The
conflict is resolved fairly quickly in my opinion. In this short time
frame of the episode, they probably did not have much of a choice but to
wrap things up quickly.
