The Story, Part 1:
Two ships, Xanadu and Eldorado, are attacked by a ship that is “twice the
size of a Viking Class Cruiser”. The ships are carrying supplies for
the “Starsmith Project”. The Starsmith Project aims to increase
spaceship engine speed by a factor of 10 using a new hyper-drive component
called the SPA1. Jon Graydon and Buddy Griff are assigned the task
to pickup Prof. Starsmith and bring him back to earth. When they
attempt to bring him back, he goes under an unexplainable transformation.
Editorial Comments for Part 1:
There is a major shift between this second episode and the first episode,
The Sun Stealers. In the first episode no one on earth knew of the
existence of aliens. When brought on board of the alien space craft,
in The Sun Stealers, Captain Jon Graydon frantically broadcasts that aliens
do exist. The way it is said leads one to believe it is the first
confirmation of alien life. When Maura was told about it, she says, “I
am not sure of any aliens… yet.” It seems pretty clear in the first
story that this is a first contact with aliens.
In this episode of the Starsmith Project, Commissioner White talks about
commercial vessels in space. Where are these commercial vessels
going? Presumably they are doing trade with other planets, at the very
least, other earth colonies.
The Story, Part 2:
The alien Starsmith is saved from death. The crew learns that
Starsmith’s real name is “Mateeb” and he is a thought magician. He replaced
Prof. Starsmith to steal the new invention so they can make their ships fast
enough to save the people of Nichona. Emperor Mika is now delusional
and putting his people at risk and is willing to kill anyone who stands in
his way.
Editorial Comments for Part 2:
This episode continues with what is a common fact for all remaining episodes
that it seems to be widely known, at least to the members of the ISA, that
other aliens do exist. The space station has an Alienology unit.
An entire alien database now exists and is used to determine what kind
of alien has replaced Prof. Starsmith. They see that his cells are 92%
Paragon Violet.
The narrator says that light speed is normally non-lethal to terrestrial and
alien beings. Again, this implies a knowledge of multiple forms of
alien life capable of space travel. It also implies that light speed
travel has some level of being a common mode of transportation. It is
also said that by this time, space travel is so common that there are
“Commercial Vessels” in space.
