Fans had recorded the Alien Worlds radio program during its original run on radio. While some fans would try to hit "pause" on the tape machine during commercials, sometimes they captured the ads and comments from the D.J.s The following are some notable comments from these broadcasts.
For the episode, Starsmith Project, Part 1, the 99X DJ that introduced the
episode said the following, “... WXLO New York. The station the
crosses the threshold of the unknown, with contemporary, original, spacey,
radio drama, at your request. At 11 O’clock on Saturday night, it’s
now time for Alien Worlds.”
Editorial comment: Did the D.J. mean that that it was requested to be
shown at 11 PM, or did he mean that the show itself was requested by
listeners? I would assume it was the latter. If so, then this
is some evidence that people were contacting the station and requesting
this program. While creating these pages, I have not been able to
find out any information on this. I learned of the program simply by
looking for something to do one Saturday night and was going through the
radio stations, stumbling upon the broadcast.
Later in that same Startsmith Project broadcast, the D.J. states they are
the exclusive radio station in New York City that is broadcasting Alien
Worlds. He stated this on virtually every airing of the show.
It is notable that sometimes the radio station 99X would put in
commercials in places not meant for commercials. For example, they
would fade the music after the story ended, play some local ads, then fade
back in to play the show credits.
At the end of Night Riders of Kalimar Part 2, the 99 XLO D.J. asks
listeners to call in or write in to let them know their thoughts on the
radio show. He provides the station phone number and mailing
address.
During a commercial break for Keeper of Eight Part 2, the 99 XLO D.J. said
the following, “Well here we are again, Saturday night and Alien Worlds
heard exclusively every Saturday night from 11 to 11:30 on 99X WXLO in New
York. And we’d like to thank you at this time for the great response
you have given us to this program over the last few weeks. We
understand that people are really getting into the science fiction radio
drama. It’s new, it’s creative, it’s original, and we are happy to
be bringing it to you on 99X….”
On a commercial break for The ISA Conspiracy Part 1, the 99X D.J. said,
“It’s Saturday night in New York City and you are listening to the only
contemporary radio drama going on anywhere and we’re proud to be bringing
it to you exclusively here on 99X. Of course it’s Alien Worlds...”
Later on an ISA Conspiracy Part 3 break, the 99X D.J. said, “You’re
listening to Alien Worlds, being broadcast exclusively on WXLO, 99X, New
York. We’re bringing you Alien Worlds because we want you to
remember what it was like, if you can, before television came along to
take your imagination out of your mind and onto a little screen in front
of you. You listen to Alien Worlds, and your mind becomes the
screen. We hope you’re enjoying this program. It is something
different for contemporary radio. If you like it, we’d love to hear
from you.” He then goes on to give the radio station address.
It would be very interesting to read those letters today.
